Resilience in the face of adversity

Adversities are a part of life. If we didn’t have adversities, we wouldn’t know the difference between a good or a bad situation because a bad situation would not exist. I have had many difficult periods in my life and will probably have a lot more.

As humans, we have a natural tendency to panic when we are faced with a negative situation. Therefore, we act without thinking or while we are overwhelmed with fear, sadness, anger or any one of the countless negative emotions.

Adversities, no matter how bad they come are good. Without hardships, we wouldn’t be able to grow. These challenges we face in our daily lives strengthen us for the future. They make us resilient.

Resilience is not something we are born with; it is something we develop over time. Once you have faced adversity and you beat it, you have now learnt from these adversities. You become more resilient. You have a sense of accomplishment, knowing you got through this situation. If it ever happens again, you will learn how to tackle it.

How to be more resilient when faced with adversity

Being resilient means to be able to recover quickly from difficulties. You don’t learn this instantly or just by going through adversity. It is a mindset—a lifestyle. You need to change the way you think and feel in a challenging situation.

Thinking Pattern

One of the main factors that have helped me a lot is looking at a situation differently and keeping my emotions in control. Taking a deep breath and analysing the event from an outsider’s perspective or detaching myself from that event allows me to think objectively and find new ways to solve a problem. It will take time for you to develop this skill, and if you do this in even the smallest of decisions, it will make a huge impact.

It does not last forever

Adversity does not last forever. We need to realise that everything is temporary. So whenever trouble strikes, you need to instantly think that it’s here for the short term. It will be over soon. As John Lennon says “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end”. We need to replace ‘forever’ with words such as ‘for now’ or ‘soon’. This changed your attitude towards a situation as you realise that in time everything will be okay.

Taking breaks

We can’t always be positive towards situations. If all you do is fight through adversity every day, you’re more than likely to burn yourself out. Some days you just have to step back and ease up. You need to find a little peace of mind. You have to charge yourself up, so you don’t get weighed down. The best way of doing this is by spending time with your loved ones and forget about your worries. It gives your mind time to heal. Some of the best ideas come when you’re not trying to think about them. Who knows, you might just find a way to beat your adversity!

  1. It was nice, alot of good stuff honestly and somethings that need to be said and put out there. Sometimes all we need is knowing how to face the situation head on. Keep it up!!!
